This is one of my favourite Japanese 'fast food' meals.

Ingredients (serves 1):
- A cup of rice (great way to use up leftovers, e.g. from the rice cooker, but in this case I used 'boil in the bag' basmati rice)
- One salmon fillet
- A handful of fried wakame seaweed
- A cup of green tea
- Soy sauce to serve

- Cover the salmon fillet generously with salt (sea salt is best) from both sides and leave to rest for 30 mins. If the fillet is quick thick, cut it in half lengthways first.
- Meanwhile, if you are using fresh rice take this time to cook it. Otherwise just have your cup of leftover rice ready.
- After the 30 mins, wash the salmon fillet clean of all the salt. It will feel slightly leathery to touch now. Cut it into little cubes.
- Put the kettle on and make yourself a large cup of green tea. Throw in a handful of dried wakame seaweed.
- While the tea is brewing, cook the cubed salmon in boiling water for about 5 mins then drain.
-Finally, assemble: first the rice, then the salmon, lastly pour over the green tea with the wakame, which should end up resting on top. Serve with a dash of soy sauce.

How does this work as a bento? All you need is to pack an extra bowl (and spoon!) and have access to some hot water at lunch time. I tend to get an extra salmon fillet when I'm making a salmon dinner which I salt and cook in advance. The next morning I then pack my leftover rice, the salmon, a sachet of green tea, and a handful of dried wakame, plus a wee tube of soy sauce. At lunch time I just make myself a cup of green tea and assemble as above. I keep the salmon cooled so it doesn't go off, but the warmth of the tea reheats it and the rice is at room temperature anyway. It's not a very hot meal, but still very tasty. If you won't have a kettle at hand, you can take some hot green tea in a thermos flask.

Catching up on posting lunches.

I wasn't sure if the rice cooker would finish in time, but it did, so he got two kinds of rice today, a bamboo-infused short grain white rice (the bamboo makes it pale green) and brown basmati.

This is served with butternut squash first steamed and then sauteed with garlic, red onions, and red bell peppers.

The soup today is green garlic and chickpea soup, made with two bunches of green garlic, chickpeas I'd cooked in the rice cooker, fresh thyme and a little olive oil , some lemon juice and zest, and smoked hot paprika.

The salad is mixed baby greens with apples and pecans and sliced smoked turkey under that. I can't recall the dressing but it was probably more of the honey-mustard.

The dessert is nonfat yogurt mixed with a little maple syrup and topped with cinnamon.

Opened in 1852, rebuilt and reopened 1892. It was intended for the reformation of boys convicted of criminal practices. Money for their upkeep originally came from voluntary contributions, except for 7shillings a week for boys sent by the Government. Later it came from the Treasury and the County or Borough authorities. Boys were detained there for 3 years or more.

Children were sent from the following Institutions as well as from the Workhouses:

Park Row Industrial School for Boys - opened in 1859

Carleton House Industrial School for Girls - opened in 1874

Clifton Day Industrial School - opened in 1851

Red Lodge Reformatory for Girls - opened in 1854

Kingswood Reformatory for Boys - opened in 1852

St James Ragged School. opened 1846 by Mary Carpenter, it eventually became

St. James Back Day Industrial School.

The Bristol Emigration Home for Girls - opened in 1881 by Annie Macpherson at 9 Bishop Road, St Pauls. The home moved to Parkfield House, Beaufort Road, then in 1891 to Leigh Road South, 3 Aberdeen Road and finally in 1901 to 25 Richmond Terrace, Clifton. This home also accepted boys under 8 years of age. Both boys and girls were prepared for emigration.

John Wesley heard of the troubles of Kingswood and did much to help the people and began his mission by erecting a small Chapel called The Old School in 1746. It stood in 12 acres of land off Two Mile Hill Road. Realising the need for education, he built a School nearby to house 100 boys, who were principally the sons of Methodist Ministers. This School proved to have been a great influence in the district, but in later years it was moved out to New Kingswood, Bath, where it is now one of the important Schools of Methodism.

In 1852 this building and land were for sale. Standing as it did in these acres, it was exactly the type of School that Mary Carpenter (one of our great Bristol Reformers) needed for her Agricultural Reformatory school, her idea being that the young offenders should not go to prison but should be sent to a school where they would have to work and where the influence of those in charge would help them to become good citizens. Mary Carpenter was helped in this venture by Lady Byron and Mr. Scott Russell who made it possible for her to have the use of the premises and so one autumn evening, a cart laden with bedding, with a small boy perched on the top of it, could be seen slowly making its way through the grounds to the house. This small boy on the cart was the first inmate of the Reformatory School.

Mary Carpenter’s idea proved so effective that Reformatory Schools were started in various parts of the country and they revolutionised the prison system for dealing with young offenders.

She began to study the situation in other countries - and some of the key reform programmes that had been developed. In 1851 Mary Carpenter published her essay on reform schools: Reformatory Schools for the Children of the Perishing and Dangerous Classes and for Juvenile Offenders and called a conference in Birmingham to discuss the institutional care of young offenders. There was a lot of interest in her proposals and in 1852 she opened her own reformatory for boys at Kingswood to experiment with and publicize her ideas. Two years later she started a reform school for girls close by in Red Lodge (an Elizabethan building that had fallen into disrepair). She was also active on the writing front, publishing in 1853, Juvenile Delinquents, their Condition and Treatment.

Her work was influential - in part affecting the writing of Youthful Offenders Act 1854 (which recognized such schools). Later her lobbying helped lead to the passing of the Industrial Schools Acts 1857, 1861, and 1866. Mary Carpenter also opened a workmen's hall and was later to publish a book on the convict system (1864}.

In addition to this field of work, Mary Carpenter was well known for her interest in Indian affairs, and in the space of ten years (between 1866 and 1876) made four visits there. She was especially concerned with the education of women and penal policy. In 1870 she founded the National India Association (1870) and pressured British governments for reform. She was an advocate of higher education for women and became convinced of the need for women to be involved in public life.

Mary Carpenter remained single, but adopted a daughter in 1858. She died in 1877.

A child, under 14 years of age, could be sent to an Industrial School for begging, wandering, consorting with thieves or prostitutes or because the parents deemed him/her uncontrollable. If a child was found gulity of a more serious offence or had been before the courts previously he/she was usually sent to a Reformatory School. Sometimes these institutions were used as both Industrial and Reformatory School, for example Feltham.

Both institutions gave basic education to the inmates and taught them a trade such as shoemaking, tailoring, wood chopping, carpentry and farming, for the boys and, cooke

Classic Mexican snack flavors are rolled up in a flaky crescent appetizer that's sure to please guests young and old.


1 can (8 oz) Pillsbury® refrigerated crescent dinner rolls or 1 can (8 oz) Pillsbury® Crescent Recipe Creations™ refrigerated flaky dough sheet
1 package (3 oz) cream cheese, softened
1 1/2 teaspoons Old El Paso® taco seasoning mix (from 1-oz package)
1/3 cup finely shredded Cheddar cheese
1/4 cup Green Giant® Mexicorn® whole kernel corn with red and green peppers (from 11-oz can), drained
2 tablespoons finely chopped green onions (2 medium)
Old El Paso® Thick 'n Chunky salsa, if desired


1.Heat oven to 350°F. Spray cookie sheet with cooking spray.

2.If using crescent rolls: Unroll dough; separate dough into 4 rectangles. Firmly
press perforations to seal. If using dough sheet: Unroll dough and cut into 4 rectangles.

3.In small bowl, mix cream cheese and taco seasoning mix. Stir in Cheddar cheese, corn and onions. Spread 2 tablespoons cream cheese mixture over each rectangle to within 1/4 inch of edges.

4.Starting with one short side, roll up each rectangle; press edge to seal. With serrated knife, cut each roll into 6 slices; place cut side down on cookie sheet.

5.Bake 13 to 17 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Serve warm with salsa.

High Altitude (3500-6500 ft): No change.

These are going to the neighbors, not too sweet tasting ~


2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 stick butter
3 oz. cream cheese
3 large eggs
1/2 cup gradulated sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1/2 cup Crisco butter shortening
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 tsp. almond extract
8 ounce pkg chocolate chips
8 ounce pkg peanut butter M & M's
8 ounce butterscotch chips

Heat oven to 350.

In medium bowl, combine the flour, salt and baking powder; set aside.
In large mixing bowl, add softened butter, sugars until creamy and fluffy.
Add eggs and shortening and beat in throughly.
Next, the vanilla and almond extract.
Gradually add in flour mixture until all in blended together.
Add chocolate chips and mix by hand.
Decorate cookies with red, green sugar or other decorations
Spray PAM on cookie sheet. drop dough and leave 2" apart.
Bake for 8 minutes, until bottem is lightly brown.
Remove and transfer to wire racks.
Next batch, add Putter Butter M&M's to dough and repeat instructions.
The last batch, add butterscotch chips and bake.
I also added some red & blue food coloring to the last batch and came up with lilac~my favorite color. You can use any color you creative!

Yield 5 1/2 dozen ~
